REVIEW: Why does this film exist? We love Matt Damon and we love Paul Greengrass and from what I know the Bourne trilogy is great. Everything from the story of Bourne trying to find out his identity was over. Bourne even said it in 2007 after the release of The Bourne Ultimatum “I think in terms of another one, the story of this guy's search for his identity is over, because he's got all the answers, so there's no way we can trot out the same character,” Then why does this film exist?
Matt Damon was nominated for The Martian, Alicia Vikander just won an Oscar for The Danish Girl, and Paul Greengrass last film prior to this was Captain Phillips which was one of my favorite films of 2013. This film is a huge step back for all of them. What the problem is with this film is that it doesn’t care. This is merely just a bland action movie sequel that didn’t have anything to say or a story to tell. Along with Matt Damon each Bourne film we had Julia Stiles, but in this she’s in and out and you don’t care.
The action in this film is really dull, Jason Bourne is stripped of the character he has and is just a guy the CIA chases like a dumb cat and mouse games. There are fight sequences that makes absolutely no sense and the ones they do disregard logic at all. The last act is just a huge car chase with an armored SWAT car that is invincible towards other cars, but not with casino machines. Even the final action sequence involves random weapons on the ground that’s coincidental or just stupid.
Jason Bourne is just your average summer action film that maybe fans will care for but moviegoers will be left wanting better.
