Editor’s Note: This review was originally published during my adolescence. Outdated language might be seen in these old posts. Since then, my thoughts and values have grown. This review is being presented as they were originally written, grammatical errors, shitty sentence structure, and typos galore. Because to do otherwise would be that same as claiming these flaws never existed.
BACKSTORY: N/A
STORYLINE: When Jack finds an opportunity to go to Malaysia to head his water manufacturing company's new plant there, he immediately jumps at the opportunity and moves his family there. When they get there; they seem to be having problems, the electronics don't work and rarely any cars are seen in the streets. When he goes to the market the next morning, he finds himself caught in the middle of a violent rebellion headed by armed rebels executing foreigners. Jack must get back to the hotel and with the help of a mysterious British "tourist", must get his family to the American Embassy in the midst of the chaos. But is there any escape?
REVIEW: We as an audience love to play out the bullshit card especially when it comes to casting. This year alone having Kevin James playing the president of the United States inPixels was bullshit from the get go. In the marketing of No Escape we were shown soft spoken Owen Wilson being a badass trying to get his family out of China when shit goes down. Bullshit card activated here folks, but let me assure you the marketing rightfully scammed you out of that. In this film Wilson isn't a badass but instead a family guy trying to make things right. The film itself has a strong beginning and a hollow ending, but as you were marketed, you do have a thoroughly intense action thriller. When you have a thriller about an overthrow in the country, you better have a legit reason onto why it's happening and believe or not it's rather believable. It may be dumb, but it makes sense. What really gets you into the film that makes your heart beat incredibly fast is the R rating. Seeing the violence and gore of the Chinese acting out against each other is frightening, so seeing the struggle of Wilson's family attempting to leave the country really leaves an impact on you. There aren't much to say about the characters in this especially Brosnan being a British agent that we don't get into at all. But this film isn't really about character or backstories. It's mission is to make you thrilled and have your eyeballs glued to the screen and it accomplishes just that.
LAST STATEMENT: No Escape's graphic and violent tone gives you the right amount of intense and thrills that makes for an enjoyable popcorn flick.
Rating: 3.5/5 | 74%
Super Scene: Jack kills a man and is actually traumatized by it
